Thyroid Function

TSH

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is produced by the pituitary gland and acts to increase the functioning of the thyroid gland, This stimulation in turn encourages the production of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) by the thyroid. Elevated TSH may be indicative of an underactive thyroid, In comparison, reduced TSH may be associated with an overactive thyroid.

FT4

The purpose of this test is to measure the amounts of free thyroxine (T4) that is present within the blood. T4 is a one of two hormones that is secreted by the thyroid gland. Therefore, a high result may be associated with an individual with an overactive thyroid as more T4 is produced then normal. In contrast, a lower than normal result may arise if an individual has an underactive thyroid.

About this test

This is the perfect test to assess your thyroid function. This package tests for the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free T3 (FT3) and free T4 (FT4).

The thyroid is a small gland that is located towards the lower front of your neck. The thyroid secretes hormones which are important in regulating many processes within the body including growth, development, metabolism, body temperature and heart rate. The two main hormones produced by the thyroid are triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). If for any reason, the thyroid gland fails to produce sufficient amounts of these hormones you may experience symptoms associated with a thyroid disorder known as ‘hypothyroidism’. This may include one of more of the following:

  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue and tiredness
  • Depression

However, if your thyroid gland is producing too much T3 or T4 you may experience symptoms associated with a thyroid disorder known as ‘hyperthyroidism’. This may include one of more of the following:

  • Weight loss
  • Tremors
  • Excessive anxiety

Performing a thyroid function test is one of most accurate ways of diagnosing and managing thyroid disorders. Other reasons to consider taking a thyroid function test include:

  • You have been diagnosed and are taking medication for a thyroid disorder and want to monitor your hormone levels.
  • You would like to test for both T3 and T4 to assess whether T4 is being converted to T3 effectively.
